EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
