Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
