Revitalized Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in Over Two Years

19 of Medvedev's 21 titles have been earned on hard courts

A revitalized Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

Medvedev, a former top-ranked player, has endured a torrid period, winning just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a difficult moment at the US Open.

The player's unpredictability on the tennis tour - and issues with his serving in particular - caused him falling of the elite rankings and eventually splitting with former mentor Gilles Cervara.

Presently training with his coach and Goetzke, Medvedev has consistently progressed in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought competitive win over opponent Moutet.

This represents his initial title after the Rome competition and maiden on a hardcourt since spring of the previous year.

The win also means the Russian has won twenty-one titles at 21 different competitions.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a competition with my both daughters together, so to win a trophy is particularly special," commented world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in tribute of my child her name, because the maiden victory I got when my older daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."

Medvedev, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, including in the German tournament in the past months.

His retrieving strategy and regular reactions on the tennis court had led observers to question if his skill to play at the elite level was over.

But the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, attempting to advance forward and compete aggressively, backed up by an improved serving game.

Medvedev fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the tricky opponent, securing four of the last five points to take the lead.

The pair traded service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, bidding for his maiden professional victory, took control to push for a decider.

Moutet saved 4 initial chances in a tight deciding set before the champion won the break to that score to close out the victory.

Fittingly, the winner clinched the win with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman failing to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
